Community Survey Shows Support For Referendum To Address Fire & Rescue Staffing

On December 9, the Somers Village Board received community survey results that show a majority of Somers residents would support a $1,300,000 increase to the property tax levy to fund an additional eight full-time firefighter/paramedics to improve fire and emergency medical services.

Over 640 residents completed the survey, which means results are statistically representative of the community’s perspective with a margin of error of +/- 3.94 percent.

The Village Board is currently evaluating whether to place a referendum question on a future ballot. Additional updates about a potential referendum will be shared with the Somers community as relevant.

Phased project

The Village is taking a phased approach to explore funding solutions and engage the community.

  • Phase I: Assess funding options, including a potential referendum
  • Phase II: This fall, Somers residents received a survey designed to help municipal leaders determine the best path forward.

Phases I and II are now complete, the next phase will be decided over the next Village Board Meetings.

  • Phase III: If a referendum is determined to be the best path forward, the Village will provide public education about the referendum and its potential impacts on services and costs.
